How accurate is the result when finding out the sex of your baby at 20 week ultrasound scan?

I have my 20 week scan on friday and i want to find out the sex of my baby!

But could they be wrong?How accurate is the result when finding out the sex of your baby at 20 week ultrasound scan?Of course they could be wrong - the only way to know 100% for sure is either birth or through an amniocentesis

At 20 weeks everything is developed enough to see clearly IF the angle is right and the technician is experienced enough to know what they're seeing and find what they're looking for. They are usually accurate but I do know of 2 cases where someone I know was told they were having a girl and ended up with a boy because the ultrasound looks at a cross-section or "slice" of the whole picture. If, for example, the penis is floating above the area where the "slice" is taken, you would not see it in an ultrasound. When I was pregnant with my son the tech at first said he was a girl but I asked her to double check, she changed the angle and found his penis. Ask the tech to look from a few angles just to be sure. It's to check your babies anatomy for any problems (growth issues, deformities, etc)



Finding out the sex is an added bonus.



However, don't get too excited, as only 70% of scans are clear enough to tell which sex the baby is, as sometimes the babies position may obscure the view, so you can't tell.
There is a very small chance that they would be wrong. At my 15 week ultrasound they told me that they were 96% sure that it would be a boy and then at my 20 week they said they were 99% sure it was a boy and he is a boy! lol so i think they are pretty accurate these days.

Now 17 years ago they told my mom that she was having a girl and the docs swore she was having a girl and then she delivered a boy! lol she had all girl stuff and had to trade everything in for boy stuff. There is always a chance of them being wrong but now a days the ultrasounds are pretty clear and accurate.
They are usually right. Only like 5 % or less of babies come out opposite of what the doctor thought. It doesn't happen often.How accurate is the result when finding out the sex of your baby at 20 week ultrasound scan?
