I'm getting the Mirena later this week. I had the Paraguard IUD and was cleared to have sex without backup right away. But, I have read that with you should wait a month. This makes no sense to me because Mirena is the same idea as Paraguard only with even more protection from the hormones. How long do you have to wit to have sex without a backup method after Mirena insertion? The Mirena doesn't have "more" protection, it has a different kind of protection. I believe that the manufacturers suggest a month for both of them to protect themselves. Realistically, immediately is probably fine, although a week or so might be wiser. How long do you have to wit to have sex without a backup method after Mirena insertion? If you have it fitted on your period (which you should it makes insertion much easier if your cervix is open slightly) then you should be protected from day 7 but double check with the doctor fitting the device.
I had one fitted 4 years ago purely to control heavy periods and am having it out tomorrow because I'm fed up my low libido and I have been unable to shift the 10lb I gained immediately after having it fitted. I remember reading the information leaflet and I think you are protected after 7 days, certainly it wouldn't be as long as a month. The hormones are similar to the mini pill.
