Why is my wireless connection faster than my wired?

I admit i was using and old ethernet cord, but could that be a problem? I game online on my ps3. I was used to xbox no wifi so i just plugged this very long ethernet cord to the ps3 to my router but it would sometimes mess up and take long to download and lag a lot. so i decided to try the wifi and in a few seconds it connected and is working a lot faster nad no lag at all. I always though wired would be faster, so how is wifi faster if its digital and not wired? Kinda boggles my mind lolWhy is my wireless connection faster than my wired?
It could be the ethernet card, it could also be that the machine has spyware, a virus or a trojan horse. You might want to get another card and try that out. Just to be safe try this out first.

Well try to run the anti-virus tools you already have. I wish I could help more.

There must be a short in the cable somewhere, since even an old Cat 3 cable would be capable of 10Mbit/s, which is likely as fast as your internet connection.
it could be the ethernet cable not working properly because there is absolutely no way you could get a better connection on wifi than on a wired connection. whenever i try my ps3 on wifi i always get a little lag and disconnect randomly whereas when im on the wired connection, everything works smooth and no problems. I suggest you do whatever is more convenient for you, if wifi seems fine then stick on wifi instead of blowing $60 on a new ethernet cable.
